Driver Hits Teen & Toddler On Irving Sidewalk
IRVING (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
A teenager and a one-year-old were rushed to the hospital after being struck by a car while visiting an Irving sidewalk sale.
The accident happened on Wingren Drive just north of Airport Freeway.
The only signs left of the accident that happened in front of the Wingren Village Apartments are debris and the tire tracks from the car that slammed into a small group of people who were having a sidewalk sale.
The accident happened around noon. According to police, the driver accelerated after pulling out of a parking lot and lost control of the car.
The vehicle left the roadway striking the toddler and the child's 17-year-old female caregiver. The vehicle also hit a telephone pole.
The girl's grandfather who doesn't speak English described what happened. "He says the driver was stopped, coming out of the parking lot, when he turned," explained Martin Hernandez. "He accelerated, hitting the boy and girl then the hitting the telephone pole."
The boy was taken by helicopter to Children's Medical Center in critical condition. The babysitter's grandfather said the one-year-old looked to be in bad shape with serious head injuries. One investigator told CBS 11 News the toddler is expected to be okay. The 18 year-old is in good condition.
After the crash nearby neighbors ran outside to see what happened. "I seen the kid, either after she'd got hit, and she spun around the car or come out from underneath it. I just seen her kinda rolling on the ground," witness Charles Harrison explained. "Seen the car go through the pole and then come to a stop over next to the brick wall."
Police say neither drugs nor alcohol played a role in the accident and they don't plan to charge the driver.
