JFK Hearse To Be Auctioned In Houston
(CBS 11 News)
A piece of history seen by millions of Americans will be up for auction this weekend in Texas. It's a car from one of the darkest times in American and Dallashistory - an event remembered first-hand by many North Texans.
The vehicle being auctioned is the Cadillac hearse that carried President John F. Kennedy's body from Parkland Hospital to Air Force One at Dallas Love Field.
The nation's eyes were focused on the car for about 10 minutes during that trip.
There was also a second hearse that carried the president's body in Washington, D.C., but it was destroyed on orders from the presidents' brother Bobby. It's not clear why the second hearse wasn't destroyed.
"I think it just flew under the radar. I think it just got missed," says John Lyons, with the Worldwide Group Auctioneers. "I think if Bobby had thought of it, he would have had this one destroyed, too. He really wanted his brother's memory to be cherished."
The 1964 Cadillac Miller-Meteor hearse was bought by Alvarado businessman Ardeen Vaughan back in 1968 and he's held onto it ever since.
There are no estimates on how much the hearse will sell for. The auction is this weekend in Houston.
