Did SUV Explosion Also Cause Texas House Fire?

KEENE (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Investigators want to know if an exploding SUV sparked a Friday morning house fire in the city of Keene, located in Johnson County.

The homeowners, Dennis and Debrah Lehman, have lived in the home for 29 years.

The vehicle in question was a 2007 GMC Yukon. According to the owner, the car caught fire and exploded while sitting in the driveway with the engine shut off.

"I came home last night about 11 o'clock," said Debrah Lehman, "and about 5 o'clock this morning, my young neighbor who just moved in about a week and a half ago called me and said, 'Mrs. Lehman, your car is on fire.'"

The neighbor, Aaron Weber, is a film student. He was on his way to class when he spotted the fire and videotaped the entire thing.

Strong winds then spread flames from the vehicle to the house in the 3400 block of Old Betsy Road.

The Lehmans escaped without serious injuries. "I am having to make a little light of it," said Debrah Lehman, "because I know we got out with our life and that's what counts. None of the rest of it matters. I'm just thankful we were able to get out."

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is already looking into two similar complaints.

While the Lehmans are glad that Weber warned them about the fire, they are left wondering why General Motors did not warn them about the car. "I'm not happy with them, that's for sure," said Debrah Lehman. "People should have been notified."

CBS 11 News spoke with a spokesperson for General Motors, who said that the company would be sending investigators to the scene, and is already cooperating with the other safety investigations.
