Family, Deputy Deliver Baby On Side Of Interstate
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
The side of a busy freeway is no place to deliver a baby. But when a North Texas woman went into labor on the way to the hospital, a Dallas sheriff's deputy helped make the special delivery.
It happened Sunday afternoon on I-45 near downtown Dallas.
The Baby was in a rush to meet the world, she came five days before her due date, and before her parents could get to the hospital. Luckily, help arrived just in time.
As a Dallas County Sheriff's deputy, Sgt. Bryan Sherman has seen and experiences a lot. But delivering a baby was not something he was prepared for.
He says it was a wonderful experience.
Sgt. Sherman was driving on I-45 this afternoon when he saw a car speed past him. He followed and pulled over the car. That's when he realized this was a different kind of emergency.
Sherman jumped to action and, with the father by his side, delivered the baby before any other help arrived.
And now, the family and deputy will always have a bond - a six pound, 13 ounce girl named Kemia.
New mother Danielle Dansby is grateful. "We really needed the help ... What would have happened."
Sgt. Sherman says he has never delivered a baby before, but he says he relied on his experience of being in the delivery room for the birth of his own children.
