Cowboys Safety Keith Davis Shot

Carjacking A Possible Motive

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― Dallas Cowboys safety Keith Davis was recovering at Baylor Hospital after being shot early Sunday morning – twice.

Dallas police say Davis and a passenger were traveling on I-635 near the Tollway when another car pulled up and opened fire. Authorities have not said where Davis was coming from or where he was going. They have no suspects in custody.

Police say Davis thought the incident might be related to a carjacking attempt, but there are lots of questions surrounding those claims. Police say they do not have a very detailed description of the suspects.

Keith Davis has been called "The Comeback Kid" by some in the football community. He was cut from the team in 2004 after being shot twice in the arm and once in the hip outside a Dallas topless club. The Cowboys re-signed the 28-year-old Davis and gave him another chance. He might be facing more controversy after Sunday morning's shooting on a Dallas freeway.

Police Lt. Rick Watson told CBS 11 News, "It's our understanding through interviewing Mr. Davis a car pulled up next to him and fired multiple times at him and the occupant in his vehicle."

Police say that just after 5 a.m. Sunday Davis and a passenger were heading west on I-635 near the Tollway when another vehicle pulled alongside and shot at the car. Investigators say Davis was hit twice, after which his passenger took the wheel and drove Davis to a hospital.

Authorities say they don't have a suspect description other than a dark vehicle with tinted windows. They say Davis was driving a custom-made Chevy Impala.

Police can only speculate on a possible motive.

"It could be a carjacking," said Lt. Watson. "Through interviewing the victim he has not indicated that he has any enemies or that he has been in any type of confrontation at this time."

It's still unclear whether Sunday's incident had anything to do with the shooting a few years ago. Officials say a carjacking attempt while both vehicles were traveling at high rates of speed on the open highway could be suspect.

"If indeed this is the motive," Lt. Watson said, "I would agree it is a little unusual to have a carjacking in the middle of the freeway."

Davis is listed in stable condition at Baylor Hospital. He will undergo surgery, but police would not say where the bullets struck him. His passenger was not hurt.

The suspect remains at large.
