Family Shocked By Mom Who Threw Sons Off Bridge

Police are still searching for answers as to why a mother would throw her two young sons - and then herself - off a bridge and into oncoming traffic.
It happened about 6:30 Wednesday morning on the Jim Miller Bridge over Interstate-30 in Dallas. Khandi Busby and her two sons, ages 6 and 8, all survived, but that same night family members and witnesses were still in shock.
The events unfolded during the early morning traffic rush and cars were only going about 35 miles an hour. Witnesses say that may be the only reason no one was killed.
"Considering the traffic coming down on a work day, the kids are very, very lucky they are not more severely injured," a police spokesman said.
Wednesday night the news still seemed unreal and unbelievable for Busby's sister, Monica. "I just heard. They said she threw them off the damn bridge, and then she jumped herself."
According to police, 27-year-old Busby, hurled her sons off the bridge, to a 22-foot drop off that ended on Interstate-30 - then she followed.
Moments earlier, the family had been sitting in a car with Busby's father at a nearby gas station. Witnesses say the boys tried to escape but were overpowered by their mother.
Witness Juan Martinez was on his way to work when the incident occurred. "I saw the kids falling down, and I thought they were garbage bags," Martinez explained. "So I tried to swerve to avoid running over them."
Martinez , who has two children of his own, says the images replayed in his mind all day. "I was shocked. I wasn't expecting it to be a person, much less kids falling off a bridge."
Another witness told CBS 11 News that she saw one of the boys fall on his side and rise to his hands and knees - staring right into a van's headlights. She says he was coherent but terrified.
Amazingly, police say the boys weren't struck by any vehicles - their relatively minor injuries were from the fall.
Busby now faces two counts of attempted capital murder. Her criminal record lists past arrests including robbery, assault and burglary. Her sister says she wishes she had sought help before it was too late.
Wednesday night the boys were in stable condition at Children's Medical Center. Their mother is listed in fair condition at Baylor Medical Center.
