Killeen Pastors Pray For Fort Hood Soldiers

KILLEEN (AP) ― A large Baptist church in Killeen opened its doors for a special prayer service Thursday night in response to the Fort Hood shootings.

Memorial Baptist Church Pastor Ken Cavey says church leaders knew there would be a lot of spiritual questions, with people asking "Why?" and "Where is God in all that?"

He attempted to humbly answer those questions for the 60 people who attended. They prayed for the 12 dead, 31 wounded, their families and the medical community treating the victims.

"When something like this happens you're dealing with a significant breach of trust as well as a significant breach of your own fear," Cavey said. "'I survived this, what about the next time?"'

Of the 1,100 who regularly attend Memorial's two Sunday services, about 75 percent are either active or retired military, the pastor said. The church is three miles from Fort Hood's main gate.

At First Baptist Church in Killeen, the Rev. Randy Wallace said the church is praying and waiting to respond to needs. About a third of Wallace's 500-strong congregation has direct ties to Fort Hood.

"I don't know of another city our size that has been home to two mass murders," Wallace said, referring to the 23 people who were killed at the Luby's Cafeteria in Killeen in 1991.

Some of those survivors are members of First Baptist. On Sunday, Wallace said he will attempt to draw some parallels between them while offering a lifeline to all who survived Thursday's shooting.

"This was equal to the Oklahoma City bombing when you say this was an American serviceman who chose to take out his venom on American servicemen," Wallace said. "It's more twisted and dark when the enemy is us."
