Man Shot To Death In Garland Parking Lot

GARLAND (CBS 11 News/ AP) ― Garland Police say they had to shoot and kill a man who came to the General Dynamics and Tactical Systems plant armed with a gun.

It happened late Wednesday afternoon on the 1200 block of North Glenbrook Drive. Police received a tip the man was armed and suicidal and was heading to the plant.

Officers met the man in the parking lot. Police say he got out of his pick-up truck and showed a gun.

Garland police spokesman Joe Harn said it was not yet clear Wednesday whether the man -- who had a gun -- shot himself or was shot by officers in the company's parking lot.

"Shots were fired. We do know that a police officer fired," said Officer Joe Hare with the Garland Police Department. "We're waiting for the ME to get here to see if the man fired."

Sources within the company tell CBS 11 that the gunman worked for General Dynamics for 20 years and was laid off Wednesday.

General Dynamics spokesman Kendell Pease said the Garland location forges metal products and makes the casings for military bombs dropped from airplanes.
