DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
The Lakewood Theater showed its first movie in 1938, and has continued to thrive after all these years.
Sitting in the Lakewood Theater is like travelling back in time.
"Years ago the street car track ran all the way to the theater, so it was really easy to get to," said Jeanette Howeth Crumpler, author and Lakewood resident. "At one time, every other row had a love seat at the corner."
Crumpler has lived in Lakewood since 1948. She and a fellow Lakewood resident wrote a book about the area and about the theater.
Jim Davis used to go to the theater in the 60's when it screened family movies and when popcorn was 75 cents.
"The first time I kissed a girl was at the Lakewood Theater on a Saturday afternoon on the front row," he said.
The theatre survived some hard times in the 80s, when there was a possibility of closing down. Now under new management, the theater is thriving by hosting concerts.
Seventy years after it was built, the art-deco architecture and much of the interior has stayed in tact. It's proof that some things don't change.
"I hope it never goes anywhere," said Davis.
