Lang TAKS Investigation Results Sent To TEA

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― The Dallas Independent School District has released its report on TAKS irregularities at Lang Middle School to the Texas Education Agency (TEA).

But Tuesday officials with the TEA would not release any information about the report, saying the investigation is ongoing and the case "remains under review".

Officials with the DISD would only acknowledge that the testing coordinator of the school, at the time, violated policy. The violation was in not protecting the tests and not keeping them secure. Officials say the tests were improperly stored and someone at the school had access to them.

According to CBS 11 News sources, the DISD report doesn't pinpoint a direct culprit for the alleged cheating.

Both Lang Principal Robert Peters and the school testing coordinator resigned before the end the school year in May and according to DISD officials the two are not cooperating with the investigation.

"The people that were most responsible for this are no longer with the district. And initially we had cooperation from them and then as the investigation continued they no longer communicated with us," said DISD Superintendent Michael Hinojosa.

For months, 8th graders from Lang have been caught in the middle of the test cheating scandal. In the spring, exceptionally high test scores in math for Lang's 8th graders were viewed with suspicion.

Because their TAKS results were suspect, 400 Lang students had to retake the test in June or risk not advancing to the next grade. When the retest results came in; the passing rate dropped by 36-percent. In April, 79.4-percent of the students passed. Of the 400 Lang students who were told to retake the test only 300 actually did.

The DISD report only covers the math portion of the test given on April 9. As it stands the TEA is still waiting for the report on the writing portion of the test.

The TEA will now take over the cheating investigation.
