Local Track Team Prays For Help To Reach Iowa

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― A Fort Worth girl's track team needs all the help they can get. Not on the track, but in the air, to fly to Iowa for a week-long national competition. "I got confidence my Lord's going to see me through," said 7-year-old runner Jaeylyn Williams. "No matter what the case may be, my Lord's going to fix it."

They are members of the Xpress Track Club, a non-profit organization that has trained top winners. "We'll probably break the records, and we'll see new things," said Williams. She is a part of the 100-meter relay team that took home gold in a recent state competition.

Athletics is in Williams' DNA. Her father was Fort Worth native Darrent Williams, the Denver Broncos player who was shot to death on New Year's Eve 2007. "I feel like he's there with me," she said.

Williams said she used to be afraid of the starter's pistol. "I always used to get scared of the gun when it popped," she said.

"I don't know if it's because he got shot, or what it was. She would just cry, so she couldn't start her race," said Tierra Leonard, the girl's mother. "Now, she's a starter."

Leonard would like to see her daughter compete at the national competition, but neither she nor the relay team can afford to go.

"The girls we're trying to get to Iowa are at the top," said team administrator Michelle Swift. "They're at the national level."

There are 14 girls with the qualifying times to participate in the national track meet in Des Moines. Along with air fare, they need a place to stay.

Khadija Ross is a member of the relay team that took home the silver medal. The 9-year-old prays before her track meets. "I say, 'God help me to run fast on the track, and help me to get a gold medal.'"

Now, they're all praying to get to Iowa. "No matter what the case may be," said Williams, "my Lord's going to fix it for me."
