Officials Say MRSA Caused Texan Teen Death
WESTLAKE (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
There are new developments concerning the death of a North Texas teenager. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner says the flu did not cause the death of Taylor Moon.
CBS 11 News learned Wednesday that Moon died of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, better known as the 'super bug' MRSA.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner released autopsy results Wednesday afternoon. Now staff members at Westlake Academy, where Moon attended school, are preparing to take a proactive approach to let parents and students know about the development.
When Moon died at Baylor Medical Center in Grapevine, on February 14th, medical officials thought it may have been from the flu. At the time, Westlake Academy sent letters home letting parents and students know about the 15-year-old's death and offered flu prevention tips.
Now that the head of the school, Barbara Brizuela, is aware that Moon actually died of a drug resistant staph infection -- she says she will take similar steps to inform the school community.
It's unknown where Moon got MRSA, but he had not been at school for a week before he died. No one else at Westlake Academy has contracted the infection but school officials say they are still taking precautions.
