MegaFest Taking Year Off
Event May Not Return To Atlanta
DALLAS (AP) ―
Bishop T.D. Jakes is putting his popular religious gathering, MegaFest, on hold for next year.
The Dallas-based minister also says the event may not return to Atlanta the next time it's held.
Derrick Williams, a spokesman for Jakes' Dallas mega-church, The Potter's House, says the decision was based on surveys of those who attended the four-day event.
Williams says attendees found travel and lodging costs burdensome. At least 70 percent of the MegaFest's visitors came from outside Atlanta.
According to the Georgia World Congress Center Authority, MegaFest had an estimated economic impact of $94 million -- which includes estimates of money visitors spent on lodging, transportation and food. The event generated nearly $4 million in sales tax revenue.
MegaFest is seen as one of Atlanta's biggest religious events and lucrative conventions, which brought 500,000 people to the city at its height.
Lauren Jarrell, a spokeswoman for the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau, says the group has been talking to MegaFest officials about bringing the event back to the city in 2008.
