Federal Agents Raid Dallas Pharmacy
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Federal agents raided a Dallas pharmacy Wednesday. Customers trying to get their prescriptions filled were stunned when officers walked in with guns drawn.
Police say a search warrant was served at the Melrose Pharmacy in the 2500-block of Oaklawn Avenue. The action was taken as part of a long investigation involving several departments including the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency and the Dallas Police Department.
The search warrant was part of a sealed indictment. DEA officials say the investigation is part of a 'diversion case'. Officials would not say if there had been a diversion of controlled substances, i.e. bogus prescriptions being filled, or if prescriptions weren't being filled properly.
Wednesday afternoon two agents wheeled away cases offering few clues as to why they spent the day at the pharmacy.
The raid left customers to find someplace else to fill their prescriptions. "It's a little uncomforting to see that happen. Of course, not knowing what's going on you can't really assume the worse," Melrose Pharmacy customer Shawn Tanner told CBS 11 News. "But it's very strange having DEA agents in the pharmacy."
The family owned drug store compounds prescriptions that means they can mix individual medicines into what customers need. The pharmacy was closed for the day.
DEA officials say they do not expect to be on the premises Thursday.
After the warrant is fully executed the pharmacy is expected to be back in full operation.
