Man Accused Of Torturing Puppy Asks For Jury Trial

by Tiani Jones
DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― Deshawn Brown stands accused of cutting, stabbing and burning a 10-month-old pit bull the morning of April 13, 2006.

Veterinarians worked to save the dog, who they named Mercy. However, Mercy died later from the wounds.

Local media were in the courtroom Monday (July 16, 2007) when Brown asked for a jury trial.

A member of the media asked his defense lawyer, "Can your client be proven innocent?"

"You're going to have to go back to government class, because Mr. Brown doesn't have to prove anything, as you should have just heard Judge Snipes say," said Dan Wyde, Deshann Brown's lawyer.

Then Wyde accused the media of bias.

"Cases are not made to be tried in the media, where they can be edited with selected portions and snippets," said Wyde.

During a ten-minute long interview, Wyde talked at length about the first amendment. But when our cameras tried to get a picture and talk to his client, Wyde tried to shut the door on our photographer and physically pushed him out of a public stairwell.

The case is far from over.

A pretrial will take place in a month, and a jury of peers will decide guilt or innocence sometime in September.
