Crews Search For Missing North Texas Boaters

ATHENS, Texas (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Rescue crews are searching the north side of Richland Chambers Reservoir after two boaters have been reported missing. The lake sits about 75 miles southeast of Dallas, along the lines of Navarro County and Freestone County, and is divided into two sections by State Highway 287.

The two victims have been identified as 72-year-old Jerry King of Athens and his 17-year-old grandson, Jerrod Rachel of Malakoff. King is the owner of King Sand and Gravel, located near Malakoff. Rachel is a senior from Cross Roads High School.

According to family members and local authorities, the men were fishing on the lake throughout Monday afternoon. They last made contact with family members around 3:00 p.m. Monday, but their boat came ashore at around 6:45 p.m. without them inside.

A family member told CBS 11 News that she does not believe the two men were wearing life jackets. A local fisherman said the conditions on the lake were very troubling Monday.

Texas Parks and Wildlife is now leading the recovery effort, with assistance from agencies in both Navarro County and Freestone County. Warden Craig Hernandez confirmed that crews had been using sonar to search the lake, but efforts have been made difficult due to storms in the area.
