Suspected Road Rage Driver Killed In NRH Crash

Selena Hernandez
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― North Richland Hills police believe a case of road rage may have led to the death of a 75-year-old Colleyville man.

According to investigators, just before 8:00am the driver of a white SUV, Charles Greer, began tailgating the driver of a black car, while both traveled on State Highway 26 in North Richland Hills.

According to witnesses, Greer began driving erratically and attempted to switch lanes. It was then, police say, Greer lost control of his vehicle, rolled it several times and eventually crashed into a tree directly in front of the NRH2O Water Park.

"We just seen dust going everywhere and seen a car sitting in a tree," witness Patrick Howell said at the scene.

Witnesses say after the crash, the driver of the black car stopped briefly, and then sped away.

The impact of the crash ejected Greer from his vehicle.  From his worksite window, Howell witnessed the alarming aftermath.  "He [Greer] was clear on the other side.  He was in front of the vehicle, on the other side of it – about 20 feet."

When off-duty North Richland Hills firefighter Steve Papagno saw the commotion he pulled over and jumped into action.  "I started doing compressions and after 30 seconds I stopped.  He [Greer] started to breath, he had a pulse again and started to breathe," said Papagno.

Greer was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital by medical helicopter and later died from his injuries.

So far, police have not been able to locate Greer's alleged road rage victim.  Keith Bauman, with the North Richland Hills Police Department, is hoping the investigation will lead to the second driver.  "We'd like to know who it was [and] find out what was going on, so we can paint a better picture."
