Nolan Ryan In Round Rock Hospital
ROUND ROCK (AP) ―
Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan was hospitalized Friday, but his son Reid said it was not an emergency and he is good condition.
Nolan Ryan, 59, checked into Round Rock Medical Center for treatment of recurring symptoms of a pre-existing medical condition, Reid Ryan said. Reid Ryan declined to specify the condition but said it was discovered when his father had double-bypass heart surgery in 2000.
"He takes medication for it," Reid Ryan said. "From time to time, he has episodes that require him to get checked out when he has pain or something. He's feeling good. This is more about taking precautions."
A spokesman for the Round Rock Express, one of the minor league teams Nolan Ryan owns, said he was to be transferred to Houston for further evaluation.
In a statement released by the team, Nolan Ryan said he expects to participate in next week's Nolan Ryan Elite Pitching Camp, which starts Monday in Houston.
Ryan had 5,714 career strikeouts and seven no-hitters in 27 years with the New York Mets, the California Angels, the Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers. He retired in 1993 and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1999.
Ryan is a majority owner of the Round Rock Express and Corpus Christi Hooks, Triple-A and Double-A affiliates of the Houston Astros.
