Citizens Step Up To Help Local 'Habitat' Chapter
McKINNEY (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
North Texans are coming to the aid of a charity victimized by 'Grinches' who tried to steal Christmas.
The North Collin County chapter of Habitat for Humanity had thousands of dollars worth of building tools stolen from a worksite this week. Now, some concerned citizens are trying to replace them.
"They do a lot of good work in the community and I just wanted to help them out," explained donor Beaux Seabury.
Beaux says he was going to a home improvement store anyway, so he got an extra $50 gift card to help out. "I was just pretty much appalled. I couldn't believe anybody would do something like that," he said sadly. "I know it's hard times, but we've got to do what we can to keep projects going in the community."
The heartbreak began Saturday when Habitat for Humanity volunteer builders discovered someone had broken into a worksite trailer and stole $5,000 worth of power tools.
"To see somebody steal your tools, when you're just trying to do good by building houses for people
it's a little bit discouraging," said Habitat volunteer Larry Pietenpol.
Tools in the trailer were being used to complete a house for Taira Warren. Fortunately, building on her house is far enough along that hand tools can be used to finish it out, but it'll take longer.
As volunteered worked to finish her house, Warren worried about the other Habitat projects that'll be delayed. "Habitat, being a non-profit organization, they really don't have the finances to replace things like stolen equipment."
Word is getting out and some donations have come into the Habitat for Humanity office in McKinney. So far they've received a nearly-new nail gun, a power drill and a circular saw.
On Sunday, an anonymous donor planned to treat the Habitat volunteers to a shopping trip.
Every contribution is helping and workers say they're grateful for any donations.
