Fort Worth Burglars Get More Than They Bargain For
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Surveillance video shows at least two young men getting what appears to be a big surprise when they tried to break into one North Texas house. What happened is all captured on tape.
CBS 11 News talked exclusively to the Fort Worth homeowner about the experience he calls 'frightening'.
"I think I shocked them a lot more than they shocked me," homeowner Jim Cox explained.
Burglars may have taken one look at Cox's North Fort Worth house and thought, "lights on but nobody home." But Cox always keeps the lights on and the video cameras ready.
Home security video from Cox's property shows how four men, in a minivan, pulled up outside his house, at around 11 a.m. Monday morning.
The tape shows the first burglar knocking on the door. "I'd just taken a shower and took a nap," Cox recalled.
When there's no immediate answer to the bell, a second burglar comes to the front of the house. "As I come up to the kitchen, [I hear a] large bang and thump and they've kicked through the door," Cox said.
Seconds later, the burglars are running for their lives because not only is Cox at home, but he now has his semi-automatic weapon in hand.
"The only thing that the one guy said, that sticks out in my mind, is "oh please don't shoot mister. I'm sorry. I'm sorry'."
Cox is a weapons instructor with some serious hardware. While he said he knew to hold his fire, he admits "If they had confronted me, there would have been a noise."
From reviewing the video, Cox believes that there were two other people in the minivan.
While detectives from the Fort Worth Police Department investigate the incident, Cox says he's going to print pictures of the burglars, form the videotape, and distribute them in his neighborhood.
