2 More Earthquakes Rock Cleburne Area
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Again, two small earthquakes, magnitudes 2.1 and 2.6, shook the City of Cleburne on Tuesday evening, bringing the total number of quakes to five in the past seven days.
No damage has been reported in any of the earthquakes. The others measured 2.3, 2.6 and 2.8 in magnitude.
With residents wondering what is going on, Mayor Ted Reynolds called an emergency city council meeting to address concerns. "We have just now in an emergency city council meeting passed a resolution allowing our city manager to hire a geological professional," Reynolds said.
The city expects the geologist to tell them, and their citizens, what on earth is happening in Cleburne.
"People should be aware, most people are, that these quakes are going on," said city spokesman Charles Hodges. "It's more the city that is concerned. The city is really wanting to find out why this is happening. And that's the reason we're taking the steps that we are to try to hire a geologist to come in here and take a look at what's going on."
Hodges continued on to say that these are small, hit-and-miss earthquakes, and should not cause much concern for residents.
Many people believe the quakes are caused by natural gas drilling, which started in the area in 2002. There are more than 200 wells inside the city, which is where most of the earthquakes have been felt. Drilling companies deny that they are the cause.
