Near Record Highs Today, But Arctic Air Coming

Cold Rain Starts Up Monday Morning As Temperatures Approach Freezing

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― FRIDAY: Patchy morning fog will give way to afternoon sunshine and very warm temperatures. Look for highs in the mid-70s! The record high temperature at DFW Airport is 78 degrees, set back in 2004. And we'll be close to that later today!

FRIDAY NIGHT: Cloudy and warm! Lows in the lower 60s by morning.

SATURDAY: A weak wind shift line will approach during the morning, but most of North Texas will remain dry except our extreme southeastern counties. We could see a few showers or storms touched off in places like Palestine, Canton or Athens briefly in the morning, but storms will generally develop well to the east of North Texas. We'll see the morning clouds burn away by midday and more sun in the afternoon will warm highs to near 80 degrees!

SATURDAY NIGHT & SUNDAY: An arctic cold front will approach the area after sundown and move through all of North Texas by Sunday morning. Expect a sharp shift in the wind out of the north and temperatures to take a quick tumble. Morning lows by Sunday will be in the upper 30s with a strong north wind. We'll generally see mostly cloudy skies during the day on Sunday and temperatures will struggle to get into the 40s.

SUNDAY NIGHT & MONDAY: Temperatures should begin to fall toward freezing after the sun goes down Sunday. Light rain should start up at the same time and by Monday morning, we could be looking at some light freezing rain, especially from DFW northward. We will most likely stay in the 30s all day long Monday with scattered rain. The depth and strength of this arctic air mass will be evaluated more over the next few days, but temperatures right now in parts of Alaska and northwest Canada range from -40 to -50. If the computer models are underestimating the cold air in North Texas, we could be looking at a more significant event on Monday morning. At this point, I'd plan on at least some icing problems, especially bridges and overpasses, during the Monday morning commute.

MONDAY NIGHT & TUESDAY: Indications are that temperatures should begin to rise Monday night above freezing and continue that trend into Tuesday. Rain should taper off Tuesday morning and we should see clearing skies Tuesday afternoon, but still chilly temps in the 40s at best. Again, the depth and strength of the cold air will dictate how quickly we warm up.
