Lewisville Seeking More Pipeline Placement Control
LEWISVILLE (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Lewisville residents opening their mail boxes this holiday season are finding offers for mineral rights.
Drilling for natural gas hasn't started in Lewisville yet, but the city is taking action to protect itself.
Inside city hall Monday night, council members voted 3 to 2 in favor of a resolution similar to one passed in Dish, Texas.
The Mayor of Dish said he drafted it after pipeline companies "tore up his city."
It asks the state for more control over pipeline placement, even though they are not sure if the Texas legislature will give it to them.
It's more about strength in numbers for now.
Lewisville joins more than 20 other cities in the Barnett-Shale, including Fort Worth, who've passed similar resolutions.
"There's so many unknowns about this gas drilling. People are still very very concerned about it," said Lewisville Mayor Gene Carey.
A city spokesman said a lot of people didn't think the Barnett-Shale would reach Lewisville. The first drilling permit was issued in Lewisville last Tuesday.
