Plano City Council Cuts 17 Vacant Positions

PLANO (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Facing a $17 million deficit, and struggling to survive a weak economy, Plano City Council has begun eliminating city positions.

A special meeting was held Monday to discuss the cuts.

Many Plano residents had hoped to see more police officers patrolling the streets. However, officials voted to cut 11 vacant positions in the Plano Police Department. Six vacant Fire Rescue Specialist positions were also cut.

Plano middle schools will also feel the cuts. One police officer will now cover two middle schools instead of just one.

The cuts won't end after Monday's meeting. In the coming months, the city is looking to cut another 33 vacant positions.

Cuts could also be made to public arts projects. Fees to use the city recreations centers could double. Plano residents could see a slightly higher property tax. Water and sewer bills might increase.
