"Most people think it's hard to save money, but it's not if you do it wisely," young Fink said. "I save my money and only buy something if I really want it."
The contest was held locally in conjuction with the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Greater Dallas (CCCS Dallas), a non-profit provider of credit and housing counseling and financial education.
"At such a young age, Jenna did an incredible job illustrating the importance of saving money, living within your means and sticking to a budget," said Todd Mark, vice president of education for CCCS Dallas. "Jenna's poster symbolizes the things we teach at CCCS Dallas, and we are proud to have her poster represent our agency in the BE MONEY WI$E poster contest."
A group of judges, including congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, had first named Fink the local area contest winner, advancing her poster to the national level contest. There, she competed against kids from across the country. The NFCC then named Fink the national winner in her category.
Fink will receive a $100 savings bond, a plaque and a t-shirt.
Shruti Revankar, a ninth-grader from Clear Lake High School in Houston, was selected by CCCS Dallas as the local high school winner.
"We want to celebrate all of the students who entered posters in the local contest," added Mark. "We encourage educators to get students involved each year and look forward to partnering with schools in our communities for the 2010 contest."
