It's Official! Bushes Buy Home In Dallas

DALLAS (CBS 11 News/AP) ― George and Laura Bush have bought their post-White House home in Dallas.

Today the press secretary for first lady Laura Bush, Sally McDonough, issued a statement saying, "The President and Mrs. Bush have purchased a home in the Preston Hollow neighborhood in Dallas."

Mr. and Mrs. Bush will live in the new home after the President leaves office in January 2009.  CBS 11 News had a reporter in Preston Hollow Thursday.

In late September, CBS 11 News learned that a handful of homes in prestigious Preston Hollow were on the first family's short list.

The Preston Hollow area is certainly 'high-dollar country', with some of the most expensive homes in Texas and some of the state's wealthiest residents.

McDonough says the Bushes will also continue to spend time at their ranch in Crawford.

The president and Mrs. Bush do not yet have occupancy of the home in Dallas, so the White House is not giving out any further details at this time.  But it seems likely that the new house is located at 10141 Daria Place, which is a cul-de-sac just off the Dallas North Tollway.

Dallas Central Appraisal District records show that Bush's accountant in Midland, Robert McClesky, purchased the house at that address in October.  McClesky has handled Bush's personal finances for years.

CBS 11 News contacted McCleskey who admitted buying the home on October 1 for 'a client', but wouldn't confirm that those clients were the Bushes.

The 8,500-square-foot house was built in 1959 and remodeled in 1980, according to the appraisal district's records.  It sits on 1.1 acres and backs up to the estate of Bush's friend Tom Hicks, who owns the Texas Rangers and Dallas Stars.

The one-story, red brick, home has four bedrooms and four bathrooms.  There is also a cabana, detached garage, and detached servants quarters on the property.

Last week, the house next door, 10151 Daria Place, also went under contract.  It is rumored the second property will be for the Secret Service.

The Bushes lived in Dallas from December 1988 through January 1995 before they moved into the Texas governor's mansion in Austin.

Upon learning of the purchase Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert issued a statement saying, "I always say Dallas is the best city in America to live in, and it would appear the First Family agrees. We certainly want to welcome them home."
