Dallas "Drunk List" Exposes Public Intox. Arrests

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― A controversial Web site exposes people arrested for public intoxication.

A neighborhood activist says he wants to shine a light on a problem that he says continues to spill over into residential streets around Greenville Avenue bars and restaurants.

For years he has been a video vigilante, exposing people who expose themselves while urinating on lawns around Greenville Avenue.

But Avi Adelman has found another way to embarrass nearly a thousand people all at once.

"Hopefully they will see their name on the list they won't come back here," said Adelman.

On his Barking Dog's Web site, the longtime neighborhood activist has posted the names of all 950 people arrested in 2008 for public intoxication.

Zachary Crockett is one of them. "For a guy to come around and try to out somebody...I mean, what about his past?"

The 32-year-old hairstylist says the effort to change the culture around the bars and clubs on Greenville does more harm than good.

"I'm trying to run a respectable business and what if my clients notice that?" said Crockett.

Arrest reports are public records. Adelman says his annual drunk list is legal and police agree.

"We can't say he's doing right or doing wrong," said Dallas Police Sgt. Gil Cerda. "That's his privilege."

The Web site also points out the overtime spent by the city to reduce Greenville Avenue crimes. Adelman believes his approach is a more effective deterrent.

"This is not an entertainment district. This is a community retail district with a lot of businesses that claim to be restaurants that are really bars," he said. "At some point it's going to have to stop."
