Rangers Agree To Terms With 2 Draft Picks

ARLINGTON (AP) ― Right-handed pitcher Matt Thompson, a local standout from Arlington, was one of two more draft picks that agreed to terms Wednesday with the Texas Rangers.

Thompson was a seventh-round pick from Grace Prep Academy in Arlington, which is only about 20 minutes from Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Also agreeing to terms was outfielder Clark Murphy, the fifth-round pick who is from Fallbrook High in California.

The Rangers have come to terms with 22 of the first 26 players they chose in the amateur draft in June. That includes the third through ninth picks after Thompson and Murphy agreed.

Texas still has not reached agreements with first-round pick Justin Smoak, a first baseman from the University of South Carolina, or second-round pick Robert Ross, a left-handed pitcher from Lexington Christian High School in Kentucky.

Thompson was a combined 16-6 with 176 strikeouts in his junior and senior seasons at Grace Prep.
