Louisiana-Monroe Takes 33-6 Win Over North Texas

DENTON (AP) ― Louisana-Monroe turned to an opportunistic defense Saturday to stay in the thick of the Sun Belt Conference race.

Greg James pulled down three interceptions for the Warhawks (5-4, 4-1 Sun Belt), which held the conference's top scoring offense without a touchdown in a 33-6 victory over the Eagles (2-7, 1-5).

"This was a vital win for us," said ULM coach Charlie Weatherbie, whose team snapped a two-game losing skid. "This game was very much needed for us after the last two weeks."

The James-led defense allowed just 268 total yards a week after UNT erupted for 68 points in a win over Western Kentucky. Louisiana-Monroe, which came in as the best in the league against the run, held UNT to 79 yards on the ground.

James' 16 career interceptions are the most in school and Sun Belt history. He is also the NCAA's active leader. Two of his picks came in the second half, and his final interception with 5:23 quashed any hope of a UNT comeback.

Meanwhile, a balanced ULM offense rolled up 454 yards.

Trey Revell and LaGregory Sapp hooked up for a pair of touchdown passes, and tailback Frank Goodin ran for 102 yards and TDs of 1 and 25 yards. Goodin's last touchdown came with 2:38 to play to cement the Warhawks' fourth win in their last five against the Eagles.

Revell, who threw for 282 yards on 14-of-22 passing after suffering a broken hand three weeks ago, hit Sapp for scoring passes of 12 and eight yards.

"Having Trey back was big for us," said Sapp, who caught seven balls for 187 yards. "He is such a great leader and puts everybody in the right position to make plays. This win gets us back on track."

Goodin's 1-yard plunge on the opening possession of the game gave the Warhawks a 6-0 lead. After the teams traded field goals, Revell hit Sapp for a 12-yard TD pass to cap a short, 42-yard scoring drive for a 16-3 halftime lead.

Revell and Sapp hooked up again early in the third quarter, connecting on an 8-yard scoring throw before Knott's second field goal of the game cut the ULM lead to 23-6 with 4:02 remaining in the third quarter.

But quarterback Riley Dodge drove the Eagles to the ULM 27-yard line where he was picked off by James at the 1 with 13:57 to play.

UNT never threatened again until late in the game. By that time, Goodin had scored his second TD of the night and James had his third pick to seal the win.

Dodge was 21 of 37 for 189 yards and three interceptions for UNT, which lost for the 16th time in its last 17 Sun Belt games.

It was the ninth loss in the last 10 home games for UNT, whose scoring consisted of field goals of 30 and 36 yards from Jeremy Knott.

"It was just a bad night offensively," Dodge said. "Give them credit. They've got a good defense. But we just didn't show ourselves tonight."

UNT's Lance Dunbar ran for 40 yards to give him 1,008 yards on the season. He became the ninth back in North Texas history to surpass the 1,000-yard mark.
