Musical Savant Shares His Amazing Grace
COLLEYVILLE, Texas (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Rex Lewis-Clack has an amazing grace all his own.
Rex is a musical savant - someone with that rare combination of extraordinary musical ability and exceptional disability.
In the womb, Rex had cyst on his brain. He was born blind.
"Then he began to develop these sensitivities in his hands and ears, becoming hyper sensitive to sound and to touch, and he wasn't learning like typical kids," said Cathleen Lewis, his mother.
Rex is autistic, but in other ways acts like a typical teenager. Early on, Cathleen was overwhelmed by their ups and downs.
"I felt like I was literally on the verge of a nervous breakdown," Cathleen said. She turned to the church through those rough times.
When Rex was two-years-old, she bought him a keyboard.
"The minute he touched those keys his face had this serenely peaceful look on his face like this is life. He wanted to know what was in those notes," Cathleen said.
Rex lives in California, but was in Texas recently to perform at a concert at Colleyville's Good Shepherd Catholic Community Church. Many consider him an inspiration.
"I think God wants people to have a part of that. He's got a light that should be shared," said Cathleen.
And he has an amazing grace that should be heard.
