Governor Perry Talks Up Toll Road Building

AUSTIN (AP) ― Gov. Rick Perry says he and Texas legislative leaders will work together in the 2009 session to come up with long-term transportation funding solutions.

Among the ideas he talked up Tuesday with the Associated General Contractors of Texas was ending the gas tax diversion for funding the Texas Department of Public Safety. He says that amounts to $1.2 billion in every two-year budget cycle and that the money is needed for road projects.

Perry said the DPS money needs to come from the state's general revenue.

He's also proposing creation of a Transportation Finance Corporation to allow for more Texas-based investments in roads.

Perry says Texas' transportation infrastructure is overwhelmed as more than 1,000 people per day move to the state.
