Family Grieves Murder Of Newspaper Deliveryman

By Selena Hernandez
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― A North Texas family is coping with the unexpected loss of their loved one. Robert Lawrence, 58, was shot and killed in Oak Cliff early Monday morning as he delivered papers for the Dallas Morning News.

"I'm so going to miss him – always respectful, ever loving man Robert Lawrence," a tearful Dana Winbush said. Winbush was Lawrence's fiancĂ©e.

The reality is still too devastating for the family to accept. "It's just something I cannot understand or fathom," Lawrence's sister, Jean Lawrence, said still in disbelief. "A person working that hard at that hour of the night – there is no money in his pocket."

Dallas police say Lawrence was gunned down in Oak Cliff while on his paper route. Surveillance video shows Lawrence, a contracted employee, pulling into a parking lot outside a convenience store on the 1500 block of Ann Arbor. The video shows two men ambush Lawrence. Police believe the suspects followed Lawrence, chased him down, and then shot him.

"This is a calculated, cruel, crime. The suspects possibly knew he would be vulnerable with papers in his hands," said Lieutenant Craig Miller, with Dallas police.

Family members still struggle with their loss and say Lawrence was a devoted and loving father; the youngest of 11 from Jamaica.

Though Lawrence has worked for the paper for the past 24 years, he had just picked up the route in Oak Cliff. "He didn't trust the people that lurked around those places," Winbush said.

As police continue their search for the suspects in the murder family members seek justice of their own in honor of a man loved by so many. "It's just disheartening to know that we're in this type of world and it's completely unfair," Lawrence's son Shaun said. "We want them [the suspects] to be caught and punished to the maximum."

Lawrence's death was the fifth murder within the city limits, in less than 24 hours.

Anyone with information about the suspects in the case is urged to call Dallas police.
