Before sheriff's deputies caught up with them, a Sanger man, who is battling cancer, was kidnapped at gunpoint and taken on a wild ride Tuesday.
Richard Pratt says he was hurt during the ordeal, when sheriff's deputies mistook him for a suspect.
Pratt is receiving medical treatment because he has Stage Four lung cancer. Now he's also dealing with two cracked ribs that he says he got when a Denton County Sheriff's deputy kicked him.
"I assumed that they knew I had been carjacked," Pratt explained. "They did not."
It is likely that, deputies thought Pratt was one of the burglars running from a house on FM 2164. If that was the case, police would have been partly right. Burglars were indeed trying to escape from a crime scene at the location, but Pratt had been kidnapped by one of them.
Pratt was driving north on FM 2164 when in the 7600 block, a man came running out of a driveway, stood in the middle of the road and waved him down. "The door opens and he comes in with a gun and puts the gun up against my cheek and says drive or I'll kill you," Pratt said of the carjacking.
Police say Wallace Judkins is the person who kidnapped Pratt. The 39-year-old is now charged with attempted capital murder.
Judkins took Pratt on a wild ride. The suspect sat in the passenger seat, held onto the steering wheel with one hand, and had the gun in the other hand, all the while threatening to kill Pratt.
"But I almost said, 'Dude, I've got Stage Four cancer so I'm dying in a few months anyway'," said Pratt. "But then I thought nah, maybe not. He might take me up on that offer."
Pratt says he'll use what time he has left as best as he can. As for the deputy who kicked him - he holds no grudge. "Once he found out who I was, that I was the victim, he expressed quite a bit of remorse. He wouldn't have done it had he known, but they don't know what's coming out of that car," Pratt said of the incident.
The deputy who allegedly kicked Pratt is under investigation by the Denton County Sheriff's Office.
