Santa Claus Coming To Town Through Traffic Tickets
SANSOM PARK (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Sansom Park Firefighters went out on dozens of calls Sunday. They didn't put out fires, but handed out presents instead. The gifts came courtesy of their friends in the police department.
Hundreds of toys and plenty of good cheer came into the city through their Tickets for Tots program. The program, in its third year, is giving the firefighters like Captain Russ Vanarsdel the chance to play Santa. "Yeah, you could say we're like Santa Claus."
The firefighters spent the day handing out bags of toys to deserving girls and boys. "We went and delivered Christmas presents and bicycles to lower income families here in our city."
The program was the idea of the Sansom Park Police, giving people a chance to get out of a ticket if they dropped off a new toy at the fire department. Firefighter Corey Davis would like to see the program expand. "Hopefully this will pass on and other people will see the program we're doing and do it in their communities and stuff and get it passed on."
It already has, with toys coming in from other Santa's from across the country. Sansom Park PD says they'll continue the toys for tickets program until Christmas Eve. After that, officers like Lt. James Crippen say you better watch out. "We go back to enforcing traffic laws out there."
The fire department will make another toy run Monday, after that, toys will be distributed through Sansom Park Community Church.
