DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
With the start of the holiday shopping season underway, crime at local malls is expected to increase.
North Park Mall has increased security, adding more patrol officers inside and outside the mall.
The City of Dallas will also step up patrols. City officials say they have budgeted more than $100,000 in overtime for extra police patrols at 8 shopping area.
Police say consumers should be more aware of their surroundings, ask for a security escort and park in well-lit areas.
Ted Gambordella, a self-defense instructor, suggested using a car key as a weapon.
"If he comes at you and you take this key and rip his face, you're not only going to leave an identifying mark, you're going to scare him," he said.
If a criminal is just interested in getting belongings, it's better to just give it up rather than risk being killed.
