Irving To Limit Signs Advertising For Booze

IRVING (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― The people voted in November and now retailers in Irving can sell beer and wine.

But the change is prompting a call for new laws to limit the amount of signs that advertise the sale of booze.

"We now have something we've never had before, which is an excited retail community selling beer and wine and wanting to advertise it," said Irving Mayor Herbert Gears.

At Thursday night's council meeting, city officials are expected to pass a sweeping change: outlawing neon signs hanging in business windows, making large banners illegal and even ordering removal of pole signs in some residential areas in favor of so-called monument signs built at ground level.

It shouldn't restrict big stores in the north Irving/ Las Colinas areas built with modern deed restrictions.

"We'll provide signage within our store locations, really advertising price points or specific specials to new products within the store," said Kroger Spokeswoman Rebecca King.

But others feel it's an unfair burden to businesses in older, southern Irving, especially in this economy.

"It leaves the door wide open to really put a burden on businesses that have nothing to do with beer and wine," said Roland Medina, Irving Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

"You won't be required to make too many changes unless your business changes ownership," said Mayor Gears. "The owners of those small businesses today will be completely unaffected."

Gears adds the targeted areas are more in residential areas where small businesses have sprung up.
