Mayor 'Concerned' About Six Flags Alcohol Permit

ARLINGTON (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Arlington 's mayor is weighing in on the alcohol debate at the Six Flags Amusement Park.

Mayor Bob Cluck says he has serious concerns about a proposal to allow the amusement park to sell alcohol. Cluck told CBS 11 News that he'll wait until after Thursday's Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission meeting to formally oppose the alcohol permit.

A final decision may be months away, but it's a move many people have strong opinions about.

The thrills of riding the 'Judge Roy Scream' rollercoaster may soon be mixed with the jeers of selling beer.

Six flags Over Texas wants to join a growing number of amusement parks which sell beer to park patrons.

"I just think it's a family park and you're going to open up a whole can of worms with alcohol there," said park patron Steve Pyburn.

Park patron Jody Dolan supports the idea of alcohol sales. She said, "I don't think a beer is going to hurt anybody. I don't think they should have hard liquor, but I don't think a beer would hurt anything."

The park posted the required public notice on December 17th - letting patrons know it wants to acquire permits to sell alcohol at Six Flags and Hurricane Harbor.

Park officials say they'll only sell beer and under very strict guidelines.

It's up to the TABC to make the final call, but Mayor Cluck isn't shy about his concerns. "People having too many beers, or too much other stuff, and getting on those rides and perhaps being on rides with kids… I just think is a set up for disaster."

Thursday night the TABC will hold a public meeting to talk about the Six Flags liquor permit and to inform residents about how they can formally protest the application. The meeting is being held at the TxDOT Regional Training Center at 2501 SW Loop 820 in Fort Worth. The meetingĀ starts at 7 p.m.
