Southlake Considering Imposing Teen Curfew

SOUTHLAKE (CBS 11 News) ―

Parents and concerned citizens gathered Monday night to voice concerns about a proposed curfew in one North Texas city.

The City of Southlake is considering an ordinance that they say will prevent problems with teens before they happen. Currently the Southlake school district is growing at a rate of 10-15% a year.

Signs announcing the curfew meeting garnered a lot of interest from parents.

The proposal would set a curfew for 17-year-olds and younger from 11pm-6am on most weeknights and Sunday. The curfew would be from Midnight-6am on Friday and Saturday. A few of the exceptions would include a teen accompanied by a parent or guardian, going to/from work, or being outside of their home if no neighbor has complained.

Area police say there has been no particular instance that prompted the curfew.

Parents, looking at nearby towns that already have curfews, say the idea probably isn't a bad one. "My sister lives in Bedford and she has three daughters. Her youngest is about to be 18 and she always liked the idea of a curfew," said parent Amy Lowery. "She just felt really late hours teenagers don't need to be out."

Police say they have to deal with problems from Southlake teens and other youngsters as well. In the past statues have been vandalized and officials report an increase in fights and car burglaries. The problems are ones they're hoping a curfew will help prevent. "I know it's hard to believe, but sometimes kids do leave home without their parents knowing about it," said Lt. Rhonda Moore with the Southlake Police Department.

As for the teens, it's a question of who's better to lay down the law – police or mom and dad. "They should establish one [a curfew] with their parents ya know, to keep them out of the whole party scene," said student Rachel Mulkey.

Student Sarah Jones told CBS 11 News, "Some kids might not think it's the greatest idea, but I think it's a good way to keep teens in check. Make sure they're not doing anything they shouldn't be doing."

The Southlake city council will not make a decision until the council meeting next week. If the ordinance passes, it will go into effect in March.
