Southwest Plane Turns Around With Engine Trouble

Flight To St. Louis Retuned To Love Field Shortly After Takeoff

DALLAS (AP) ― A Southwest Airlines plane had engine trouble shortly after departing and had to return to the airport on Saturday.

Southwest spokeswoman Marilee McInnis says the flight had departed from Dallas bound for St. Louis at 4:20 p.m. Shortly after, the aircraft's pilot realized there was a problem with one of the engines and the plane returned to Dallas.

"The captain had a problem with one of the engines, and they did shut that engine down and returned to Dallas," McInnis said.

The plane landed safely at Love Field around 5 p.m. and was taken out of service, McInnis said. The 137 passengers on the flight were transferred onto a new aircraft, which continued to St. Louis.

McInnis said she had no information on the history of the plane that had the engine problem.

The FAA recently ordered a check of maintenance records at all U.S. airlines following criticism of the agency's handling of missed fuselage inspections at Dallas-based Southwest.

The FAA imposed a $10.2 million civil penalty on Southwest this month for missing the inspections and then continuing to fly the planes with passengers on board even after realizing the mistake. Southwest officials have said they repaired small cracks in the fuselages of six planes last year and four this month.
