At one time or another you may have heard someone say, "You're money is no good here", well starting next week Southwest Airlines really means it. Today the airlines announced that they will no longer accept cash onboard their airplanes. Starting September 9 flight attendants for the Dallas-based air carrier will use handheld credit card devices to take drink orders and will only accept credit and debit cards for payment. In a press release statement Southwest Vice President of Provisioning, Scott Halfmann, said, "Southwest will continue to offer peanuts, snacks, juices, and sodas at no cost. The only difference our customers will see is a convenient way to pay for alcoholic beverages and Monster energy drinks, and no more in-flight announcements asking who has change for a $20 bill!" Southwest isn't the only airline making a move toward being 'cashless'. Earlier last month Alaska Airlines switched to a 'cashless cabin' for in-flight purchases. Other onboard cashless airlines include, AirTran, Frontier, JetBlue, Midwest, and Virgin American Airlines. In 2007, Apple announced that they would no longer accept cash for iPhone purchases. At the time Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said, ""We're requiring a credit or debit card for payment to discourage unauthorized resellers."According to the United State Department of Treasury, there is no law mandating that, 'a private business, person or organization accept currency or coins as for payment for goods and/or services'.
