3 People Saved From Swift Water In Springtown

SPRINGTOWN (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Rescue crews in Parker County saved three people from raging waters early Monday morning after storms created high water and trapped the men in a creek.

The incident happened at Walnut Creek in Springtown. The three men decided to take a canoe out onto the water at about 2 a.m. Monday morning. They got stuck in the swift, high waters created by thunderstorms and clung to a small island. One of the men had a cell phone and was able to call for help.

About 30 rescuers arrived at the scene. The three men were saved at about 5:30 a.m. after hours of hanging onto the small island.

The Parker County Fire Marshall spoke with CBS 11 News about the rescue operation. "Your swift water rescue is extremely dangerous. Anytime that you have to put people in this kind of water, unknown what's underneath the water, and anytime we put these kind of guys in the water, we don't know what's going to happen downstream. So we have to put people upstream to tell people if there's debris coming downstream. We also have to have guys downstream as a backup to throw them a rope if need be."

Thankfully, despite the dangerous situation, none of the rescue workers were injured during the operation.

The three rescued men were also not injured, although they emerged from the creek cold and tired.
