St. Jo Firefighters Fighting Fatigue
ST. JO (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Firefighters in Montague County have been fighting fires for three days now.
Though resources are low, the fire chief said their greatest need is for sleep.
"It's been wild," St. Jo Fire Chief Jacob Cook said. "Yesterday we were seeing 30 and 40-foot flames."
Cook is the 27-year-old commander for the St. Jo Fire Department. He's been with the department nine years.
Chief Cook said this was more of a "Bad Friday or Tired Friday" than a Good Friday.
He and his 25 volunteer fire fighters have been fighting a goliath of a fire for three days now with little sleep. "I had about three hours last night," Cook said.
Thursday the department called for reinforcements from neighboring cities, but refused to give up the fight themselves.
St. Jo volunteer fire fighter Jay Ready was sitting in a fire truck waiting for the huge fire to peek its head out of some trees.
"We can't fight it in the trees. We have to wait for it to come to us," Ready said.
He hasn't had any sleep in two days. Once the flames appeared, Ready and his partner drove off to face it head on.
Chief Cook said what they really need is rain. They hope to get all they need to put out the fires on Easter Sunday.
Until then, they could use all the help they can get.
