Former TCU Athlete Shot After Fight Over Beer
DALLAS (AP) ―
Former TCU football player Lorenzo Jones is hospitalized in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after he was shot in an altercation with his mother's boyfriend over an overturned can of beer.
The Broward County Sheriff's Office in Fort Lauderdale reports the 22-year-old former defensive tackle was shot in the abdomen on June 30.
The Miami Herald reports Jones was listed in critical condition last week at Broward General Medical Center. Spokeswoman Kathy Meyer said Tuesday that she couldn't find Jones listed in hospital records, but she would make further inquiries.
Deputies say Jones was visiting his mother when he and her boyfriend, Ricky Von Welch, argued at her apartment complex. Welch is jailed on an attempted murder charge.
Jones and two former TCU basketball players were accused of raping an 18-year-old student in her dorm room in October 2006. Jones, who was never indicted, spent 11 months in jail before the charge was dismissed.
