Police Close To Arrest In 'Tainted Muffins' Case

by Brooke Richie
DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― CBS 11 News has learned new information concerning the Lake Highlands 'tainted muffins' investigation.

Eighteen Lake Highlands High School staff members fell ill last week after eating drug-laced muffins.

Sources tell CBS 11 News the person who delivered the muffins to the school will be charged Tuesday. Officials say the suspect in the case may be a student from Bishop Lynch High School.

The muffins were delivered to Lake Highlands High School last Tuesday. Authorities say they were tainted with a marijuana extract.

Lake Highlands senior Joey Tellini has been questioned by investigators twice, according to his father.

Joseph Tellini Sr. says his son and his friend from Bishop Lynch are two of several students who have been questioned.

He says he would be shocked if his son were involved. "This is my son, I love him. Even if he was to be responsible in any way, I'd still love him. I would not like what he did. I'd be very much against what he did."

CBS 11 News spoke to Tellini's attorney who said his client is cooperating with investigators, but he's not necessarily declaring his innocence.

A joint terrorism task force continues to investigate the incident. It is a federal crime to tamper with food products.
