State To Revoke FW Child Care Center's License

Child Death At Tammy's Loving Childcare Not Only Concern, Officials Say

(CBS 11 News) The child care center where an infant died earlier in the month will have its license pulled, Texas Department of Family and Protective Services officials said Wednesday.

"While the investigation has not revealed that the death of the infant in their care was a result of abuse or neglect, the inspection that was conducted did reveal several other concerning issues," explained Marissa Gonzales, Public Information Officer for Child Protective Services.

A 2-month-old was found unresponsive in his crib on Oct. 22 at Tammy's Loving Childcare. Authorities said child care providers put Gregory Blair, Jr. down for a nap, but later found him unresponsive. They called 911 and emergency personnel tried to revive the child, but he died in the ambulance en route to Cook Children's Hospital.

At that time, officials said the infant's death might be a case of accidental suffocation or that Sudden Infant Death Syndrome was a possibility.

"The inspection last week found that, among other issues, some staff members were lacking current training on first aid, SIDS and infant care and some staff members were not aware of the names of the children and infants that they were caring for," Gonzales said.

"Child care licensing feels that these violations of minimum standards constitute a risk to children."

State investigators cited the facility -- which is licensed for a capacity of 91 children -- last year because the sheets on some beds did not fit tightly enough. Records indicated the problem was corrected.

Gonzales said the day care center will stop operation today and that the state will follow up to make sure " no children are being cared for at the operation."

This is the first time since Tammy's opened in 1994 that the state has imposed any kind of corrective action on the center," Gonzales added in an email.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office has not issued an official cause of death.
