Fort Worth Teen Nearly Dies From Drug Overdose
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 News) ―
A North Texas teenager nearly died from an overdose of alcohol and drugs. Osman Munoz was found by his middle school principal, unconscious and with a blood-alcohol content level nearly three times the legal driving limit.
According to doctors at Cook Children's Medical Center, the 14-year-old was on the verge of death when he was rushed into the emergency room. "They were saying he was at the point where his heart could have stopped in the next three to four minutes," said Raymond Hernandez, the boy's stepfather.
If Munoz had been found five minutes later, Hernandez said, "We would have been at a funeral. We would not be talking to him."
The boy had consumed a lot of beer, smoked marijuana and took prescription drugs. His parents said that it was all given to him by a 22-year-old man.
Munoz said that he wanted to skip school on Monday. When he saw the 22-year-old acquaintance driving by Forest Oak Middle School, he asked for a ride. They started drinking beer, Munoz said. "I took one of his 32s. I ended up drinking another 32 and half of another one. Then I took some bars [prescription Xanax pills used for treating severe anxiety disorders]. I don't remember though."
"I fell asleep in the truck and then I woke up in the hospital," Munoz said.
The eighth grader passed out. Witnesses said that they saw someone in a pickup truck dump him in a field across the street from the school. He was found lying face down in the grass, vomiting blood and gasping for air.
Hernandez said that he confronted the 22-year-old man who allegedly gave Munoz the drugs and alcohol, but police said that they have not been able to confirm the identity of the suspect.
