Did you ever think that there were dinosaurs in North Texas?
As it turns out, this is one of the most prolific areas for dinosaur tracks in the state. One group of scientists have even found tracks dating back millions of years.
All week long, a group of scientists and archaeologists from around the world will be in Glen Rose, just southwest of Fort Worth, hoping to uncover more evidence at an excavation site.
"We found a turtle bone right next to a dinosaur print," said Virginia Brown. Brown and her family traveled from Wisconsin to be a part of this dig at McFall Farm, along the Paluxy River.
"It's been in the family since 1930," said R.C. McFall. "That's when my grand-daddy purchased this land."
The first dinosaur tracks were discovered on the farm after a heavy flood. "It started flipping the rocks up, and exposed the tracks underneath them," McFall said. This was in the 1930s.
But McFall admits that his grandfather was just a farmer, and did not know about the tracks until turning to Dr. Carl Baugh. His group of volunteers helped uncover what was actually on the property. Now, more dinosaur footprints can be found on just one ledge than in the entire Dinosaur Valley State Park, which is located nearby.
"Most of the tracks were made by a dinosaur that's cousin to a T-Rex," explained Baugh with the Creation Evidence Museum in Glen Rose.
As scientists came to explore the area throughout the 1980s, Glen Rose became the Dinosaur Capital of Texas.
Scientists believe that one of the most unique findings is human prints dating back to the same period as the dinosaur prints. "We are looking for the truth," said Baugh. "We don't want anything else but the truth."
Once a year, volunteers from around the country return to McFall Farm looking for evidence. "It's not an elaborate thing, but it's a real unique opportunity for people to come out and do this," McFall said. The dig comes as the Creation Evidence Museum gets ready to celebrate 25 years. This weekend, the museum will showcase the Bible of Charles Darwin's wife, Emma.
McFall does not have plans to sell the land. Rather, he wants to pass it along to his children, and maybe even his grandkids.
