Rangers Sign First-Round Draft Pick Beavan
ARLINGTON (AP) ―
The Texas Rangers and first-round draft pick Blake Beavan agreed Tuesday night to a minor league contract with a signing bonus of about $1.5 million.
The 18-year-old, right-handed pitcher from Irving, Texas, High School was the 17th selection in the June draft. The 6-foot-7, 210-pounder went 8-2 with a 0.21 ERA his senior year. He struck out 124 in 66 innings.
Beavan and the Rangers agreed to a deal a day before the signing deadline Wednesday night.
"It felt like a good fit," Beavan said. "At the end of the day I wanted to be a Texas Ranger and we got the deal done."
The Rangers, which had five of the first 54 selections, still have not signed outfielder Julio Borbon (35th selection) and right-handed pitcher Neil Ramirez (44th).
Unsigned picks will be eligible for next year's draft.
The Rangers also signed right-handed pitcher Kyle Ocampo on Tuesday night. Ocampo was a 13th-round selection from Riverside, Calif.
