Thieves Siphoning Gas From FW U-Haul Trucks

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 News) ― It's happening almost every night.

Thieves come to a U-Haul facility near I-30 and Loop 820 in Fort Worth, siphon gas from several trucks and take off with petroleum they didn't pay for.

"It's definitely happened at least three times this week," said Ken Birch, U-Haul Marketing Director. "We've filed reports with the police department."

The problem started two years ago and gets worse every time gas prices go up, costing the company a lot of money.

"On a monthly average, especially during the height of the season, we're looking probably three to four thousand a month," said Birch.

The thieves often leave behind their tools and a lot of frustration.

"We pull it up. It's short on gas. So at that point we ask the customer to wait while we got get it ready so they can rent it at the proper fuel level," said Birch.

The company has hired security guards, installed more surveillance cameras and placed huge rocks around the property.

But the thieves just drive around the barricades.

The managers say it's enough to make your head spin.

"Really, I want to catch them. I want to solve the problem," said Birch.

The managers are hoping that anyone who sees anything suspicious around the area, especially during the overnight hours, will call police immediately.
