Austin Renaming Town Lake For Lady Bird

 SLIDESHOW: Life Of Lady Bird

AUSTIN (AP) ― The Austin City Council is scheduled to rename Town Lake for Lady Bird Johnson.

The council has scheduled to rename the lake "Lady Bird Lake" Thursday morning in the council chambers.

The former first lady and widow of former President Lyndon Johnson died July 11 at her Austin home at age 94.

From the early 1960s, Mrs. Johnson zealously promoted environmental and beautification issues -- especially the propagation of wildflowers throughout the Hill Country. But among her early causes was the beautification of Town Lake, which crosses the front of downtown Austin.

Mayor Will Wynn says Mrs. Johnson's efforts made Austin's beauty "the envy of the country."
